here. president obama's network, across this country, grassroots individuals are much more powerful than the individual lobby. we need to pass common sense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who shouldn't be carrying a gun. so that's the common sense nature of this. it's not about infringing upon the second amendment. it's about making sure that gun owners are responsible gun owners and we're not giving guns to criminals. the second amendment doesn't apply to regulations on other types of weapons, like weapons of war, assault weapons. so the argument is not going to stand up. we have to make sure the american people know what the argument is. that we need to keep our kids safe. we need to keep our guns out of the hands of criminals. >> what about the president now? i know he was all out and got after it big time. and now he says he's going to give this everything he's got. what does that mean to you? >> i mean, is he going to go out on the road? is he going to really take the case to the american people really going after the gun lobby and really trying

from paying the bills we racked up. >> the country will be in a dire situation. president obama knows this. he proved it before, and he is not going to play games with economic stability. >> so we have to pay our bills. and republicans in congress have two choices here, they can act responsibly and pay america's bills. or they can act irresponsibly and put america through another economic crisis. but they will not collect a ransom in exchange for crashing the american economy. the financial well being of the american people is not leverage to be used. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. and they had better choose quickly, because time is running short. >> the president, simple and direct, everybody on the same page now? naturally the republican leaders decided to confuse and distract one more time. senate republican leader mitch mcconnell decided to link the debt to spending, saying the president and his allies need to get serious about spending, the debate is the perfect time for it. house speaker john boehner also ignored the obl

curbing gun violence in this country. today, the path for change was paved. president obama announced proposals for sweeping reforms to gun laws in this country in the wake of the horror at sandy hook elementary, it's gut check time for america. >> this is our first task as a society, keeping our children safe. this is how we will be judged. >> horrible gun violence is not isolated to one cold december day in connecticut. every day wasted leads to more lost lives. >> keeping our children safe. precious children and six brave adults were violently taken from us at sandy hook elementary. more than 900 of our fellow americans have reportedly died at the end of a gun. 900 in the past month. and every day we wait, that number will keep going. >> over the past month, vice president joe biden and his task force is met with 229 groups from around the country. biden's task force provided a roadmap for the long drive ahead. >> while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every

official told nbc news it's a terrible way to run the country. but the aide gave no indication president obama would veto a temporary extension if this is how congressional republicans want to govern, so be it. they already have an approval rating of, let's see, 14% from the american people. can they do better than that? maybe they just want to see how low it can go. the writing was on the wall yesterday when republican budget chairman paul ryan told members they need to be prepared for a debt ceiling increase. the attitudes from republican leaders are a lot different today. senator jon cornyn of texas wrote an op-ed said it may be necessary to partially shut down the government in order to secure the long-term fiscal well-being of the country. now cornyn tells the chronicle editorial board we will raise the debt ceiling. we are not going to default on our ded debt. two years ago, they were gloating over their debt ceiling hostage strategy. >> no president in the near future, maybe in the distant future, will be able to get the debt ceiling increased without a reignition, reigniting of t

the united states think about what president obama has done for the progressive movement in this country in the democratic party. how can you not stand with him on this? how much more information do these lawmakers need? have we not covered it enough? other democratic senators with high ratings from the national rifle association have also refused to say if they support the president's package. max baucus of montana, senator heidi heitkamp of north dakota, senator johnson of south dakota. senator donnelley of i7d ind. senator begich of alaska, senator manchin of west virginia, senator tester of montana. however, senator mark warner spoke out in favor of the president's plan and said he believes it has bipartisan support. those senators all have a or a-plus ratings from the national rifle association. reid has a b rating. these senators know they will lose their high rating and maybe become a target with the nra if they vote for a sensible assault weapons ban. you see, we had the assault weapons ban back in 1994, but we're so screwed up in washington right now they're even afraid

disaster, not only for our country, but for the worldwide economy. >> and president obama reminded congress the economic damage done by playing games with the debt limit. >> the last time republicans in congress even flirted with this idea, our aaa credit rating was downgraded for the first time in our history. our businesses created the fewest jobs of any month in nearly the past three years and, ironically, the whole fiasco actually added to the deficit. >> republicans basically had no choice but to retreat from their hard line position, negotiating with the american people. if the country defaulted, they would be responsible for a global economic collapse. the new plan for a three-month increase guarantees another debate in the next few months. okay, let's have it. but it also shows republicans never had any intention on carrying out their threats. get your cell phones out. want to know what you think tonight. tonight's question, do republicans finally realize the consequences of holding the economy hostage? text a for yes. text b to no to 266239. we'll bring you the results lat
